Popularly respected as the national team’s record goalscorer with 37 goals in 58 appearances, Kaduna-born Rashidi Yekini was reported dead yesterday in a private hospital in Ibadan.

A devout muslim, many soccer fans will remember Yekini’s memorable goal celebration during the 1994 FIFA World Cup match against Bulgaria; that was Nigeria’s first World Cup goal.

Prior to his death, the former Nigerian soccer star has been reported ill for a long period of time. He had three wives and three children. Plans are been made for his burial in his home state, Kwara.
